Feels like Fall

Right now, in Tennessee, the hot temperatures have eased up a bit. A nice breeze and cool nights have me dreaming about all things FALL. That involves boots, scarves and the latest jean styles. But, most of all, it has propelled me into thinking about throwing a fantastic party at the house that can extend outdoors to celebrate the season.

Hugh Howser turned me onto BRANCHES florists for natural (and affordable) creations.
While I am super-excited about putting it all together, the last thing I want to do is to stress out or worry about food and set up. So, I am going to look to my party guru friend, HUGH HOWSER of H Three Events for a bit of advice and insight. He has all of the secrets for the best bartenders, glass rentals and lighting companies around. He is also SO much fun!

A perfect, casual buffet of easily prepared menu items.
A simple tray of olives and spiced nuts is an easy, but well-received buffet offering

But, for food, I'm going to seek inspiration from my friends at MStreet (specifically Robbie Wilson). I want to do as much as I can myself, but I want the display to be perfect. I always love his presentation, and am going to try to mirror that influence as I put together my own party plan. Carefully placed trays, and dishes I can make in advance are all part of the mix.

Even basic crackers and condiments can be elegant if the arrangement is well-planned
The elements are going to be simple. Because we are music people, the tunes will be paramount. Add great food, lots of premium wine (Cultivate Wines and selections from Gargiulo Vineyards are our all-time favorites). The only other element needed is fun people to enjoy. And, thanks to our fantastic friends, that's never an issue.

What is your favorite recipe to serve at a party? Please share,  as I'm seeking one new signature dish along with an inventive cocktail? Post your comment here.. and follow the Southern Sophisticate.

  1. My girlfriends and I are goat cheese obsessed! We serve some at all of our get togethers. Sometimes it is mixed with herbs and cream cheese. This summer with all my basil I covered it with homemade pesto. But when all else fails, get out that container of local honey and drizzle away. Serve with your favorite cracker and you have a yummy starter that no one can turn down. Its great for those last minute "my husband's working late, can we come over to play and have a glass of wine get-togethers!"
