For as long as I can remember, I've been visiting Patchouli's on 30A. Loved their original spot in Seaside... and like their store in Rosemary Beach even more. They have a slew of fantastic products from top cosmetic, candle and skincare lines, but what I can't get enough of is their custom scent bar. Yes, you can create your own lotion, perfume...or my favorite....body oil.

My top choice is always their Sweet Almond Oil ($20). It is the most incredible blend; choose a scent that speaks to you. They are fantastic at mixing it up. I almost always go back to the one I fell in love with, aptly named 'the beach'. It's a blend that reminds me of dunes, sand and great times. I purchase 3-4 bottles each visit. 

For when I cannot get to this beach-lovers haven, I create my own concoction at home. It will never master the same scent as their beach version, but it works for me. I use their bottles to mix in, and to display in my shower to make it feel like I'm indulging a bit.


BODY OIL BLEND

2 cups grape seed oil (from the grocery)
3-4 drops of lavender essential oil
3-4 drops of vanilla essential oil

Mix together and keep in your shower. Put on before you dry off for silky smooth skin. Also play with the essential oils and fragrances to come up with something you love. There is an incredible selection at Whole Foods Body, so you can change it up to suit your taste. If you love fig, basil or anything else, chances are there is an essential oil on the shelf. Cost per bottle... about $4, which makes it even sweeter!

View from my balcony—Fall, 2011

I HATE TO ADMIT that it has been almost 7 months since I've visited our condo at the beach. Other travels and work obligations have kept me away for far too long. SO...this month— come hell or high water—I'm heading south for a bit of Emerald Coast energy. There are so many reasons to stay close to home, but one solid reason to go—I need my 30A fix!

I like to visit  on the "off" months, before schools let out and the crowds arrive—so the window is tight. (May, September and early October are ideal). But, thanks to the (still relatively new) Southwest direct flights, deciding when to go last minute is no longer a tough decision.

First I want to see the sunset that only this stretch of ocean can provide. From our balcony it looks fantastic, but it is even sweeter when shared with great friends on the beach. A low rise table from Crate&Barrel is a must purchase, as it folds easily into a tote and elegantly displays wine, cheese and candles just as the sun disappears into the sea.

Since I no longer care to spend my days sunbathing (yes, aging stinks), I've discovered the most interesting shops to explore. My top choice for furniture, accessories and above all, books, is Tracery Interiors. I can get lost for hours in this space and in the nearby Patchouli's at Rosemary Beach. For other romping, I often try out the events going on daily at Watercolor—they offer everything from nature hikes to wine tastings.

FOR EATING ALONG THE WAY, I like buying groceries and preparing my own beach fare with a little help from Modica Market in Seaside. On days when I want to pick up something Southern without hassle, I always count on Chan's Wine World, where great cheeses and sandwiches are paired with the best vino on the beach.

And, if you want to know my favorite activity...it isn't in some tourist haven, but rather at our own place hearing the waves crash. Windows open, makeup off. Just us and the relaxed vibe that can only be found in this stretch of sand on the Gulf coast...
