Sometimes, in considering the accomplishments of the women in my life, I'm literally blown away. When your close friends are company founders, community leaders and globally famous musicians and artists... there's always something interesting to discuss. I choose to steer clear of wasteful topics or gossip. When surrounding yourself with people who have real things on their mind and goals to reach there's not much room for nonsense... and thank goodness for that!  

 I've found a common link in special, but unrelated bonds I've made over the years. All of us have grown in different arenas, yet everyone finds a way to give back. That's what I love the most...soaking up so much experience and passion for varied things when spending time with my diverse network of truly fearless female friends. The fact that they each have the desire (and actually put plans into action) to motivate others is why the respect, friendship and trust only grows stronger. I deeply admire the strength, love and evolving spirits that help me in embracing my own journey.

Each week or two, I'm going to use this space to share a little story about one of my 'peeps'. I think it will surprise you, and hopefully you'll be as moved by their paths as I am. To start, I want to brag a bit on an incredible project/concept recently brought to fruition by innovator, Jennifer Walsh. 

You may not instantly recognize the name, but your buying decisions and options for all things beauty were influenced by her (original founder of the Beauty Bar). This was the first connection any of us had to specialty product lines of cosmetics and skincare...before Sephora + influx of other countless sites/stores. She was (and still is) the expert on the latest and greatest luxe products on the market.

After selling her wildly successful company to Amazon, she created another in-demand business with Behind the Brand. She's consulted for some of the biggest names in the business. The best part is that she's hands on, honest and genuinely relates to connect quality product developers with consumers.

With all of that expertise, she's created Pride & Glory. It's the first comprehensive collegiate branded line of bath/grooming products, and already setting campuses on fire. The charitable component for community support and creating opportunities for young students to become ambassadors is brilliant. Although items have just recently become available on a public scale, the buzz is growing quickly.

Those of us from Tennessee certainly know dedicated Vanderbilt and UT fans. Her affordable, made in the USA (a big part of the philosophy) luxe products are branded for proud students, alumnus and fans. From sleek, black packaged bar soap with Vandy's logo ideal for groomsmen favors to the Volunteer hand wash pump I'm envisioning in the restrooms of sports bars and fan gatherings across the state, she's founded another winning combination.

It's fun for fans of all ages in a way that will make a tremendous difference in university markets. Pride is what I feel about Jennifer's vision... and she's certainly earning the Glory that's building around the concept. I can't wait to see where she takes it next. read more

I’ve been grounded for the last couple of months, and while I can’t complain (living in an amazing city like Nashville), my need to get away is approaching overdrive. Missing NYFW festivities was a limitation - I (privately) pouted a bit when seeing friends’ posts about the week.

Luckily, just as I’m strong enough to get out of the house and on the road, another annual fashion/beauty event is about to commence. The plus that it’s in a familiar place that I’ve been desperately longing to visit… my home-away-from-home in South Walton.

This is only the second year for the area to host a fashion week, but based on last year’s experience…. and the incredible list of talent for 2014, it’s certain to be fantastic. Inventive designers like Mychael Knight and Jin Seo are joining 30A retailers like Willow, Alys Shoppe...and a slew of others for a schedule filled with fabulous fun. The official South Walton Fashion Week also includes red carpet glam and samples galore from Patchouli's and other beauty brand faves.

Getting there’s a cinch; hop on a direct flight from major Southern cities and arrive at the glorious white sand beach headquarters in an hour or less. The other option is to toss some tunes into the car (along with a couple of fun-loving girlfriends) and hit the road. Driving to the beach from anywhere in the Southeast is a fairly quick jaunt without the summer tourist traffic.

I’m most anxious to actually see our place on the beach. It’s a Sterling Resort, and the company is providing accommodations for SWFW visitors if you need a place to stay. I can personally vouch for this one. I’ll also pop over and enjoy a night or two with friends at one of the lovely Cottage Rentals of Rosemary Beach, (another lodging partner). If you’re a fan of Rosemary’s ambiance, this is the reservation to make.

Packing for this destination isn’t usually an issue (toiletries, shorts, swimwear and sundresses and sandals live there year round). For SWFW, I'll need a couple of things. I’ve made a list of packing essentials that vary a bit from my usual beach look.

HAIR

My typical ‘do’ is an elastic band. That’s not going to cut it for a stylish soiree and runway show viewing. Ocean breezes and humidity change everything, so casually chic hair isn’t totally effortless. Thank goodness for the new collection of ‘mini’ essentials from Drybar. The line smells incredible… and the components are little powerhouses for taming the most unruly mane (aka, mine). This collection is now available online. I also suggest the Drybar's new Triple Sec 3-in-one spray (dry shampoo/volume/texture). While I’m there, I can pick up some fun hair pins/headbands to change it up a bit from day to night, but having these miracle-workers will make that an option...not a requirement.

SHOES

This is always a tough one at the beach. My worn flip-flops won’t do. I’m opting for a couple of wooden wedge designs for the higher heel height I want, but more sturdy support for my just-recovered status. They’re also the best for avoiding slipping on those pesky pebbles that teeter heels at every location near the water.

CLOTHES

I’m packing a couple of good foundation items/layering tanks and a jacket. Otherwise, I have no intention of packing a single outfit. That’s what this trip is all about. Navigating the shops is much easier than trying to create an ensemble in a big city fashion week, which is more about pre-orders. The boutiques peppered along 30A and my go-to’s in Sandestin carry incredibly stylish, quality goods from trusted designers… and at a fair price. I can’t wait to find items to get me not only through a few days of festivities, but to add to my fall wardrobe (which definitely needs a boost).

In addition to runway events and parties, design savvy retailers are hosting trunk shows. Most include bubbly (thank you) with fab pieces for purchase you can’t find elsewhere.

The best part about this trip is making the decision to go last minute. Not planning too far ahead is completely freeing. Throw some things together and take off…. work and laundry will be waiting when you get home. Seriously,  it's the best weather of the year and possibly the most enjoyable fall week (or long weekend-- Oct 9-11 are key dates) experience in the South. Pick up your phone, text your fashion-loving friends, get your tickets and join me at the beach. We’ve all been approached to join some sort of retail ‘club’. From store accounts to restaurant rewards, offers are endless. Just like album clubs in the 80's, free samples are bait for signing up/forced monthly orders (ugh). But there are genuine, greats like Harry & David’s fruit of the month. It's actually instilled faith that a surprise in the mail on a regular basis is a good thing. I opened my mind to other affiliations and discovered many -some good, others not great... and those I just couldn’t pass up. 

Only a few made my 'must’ list -- all relative to personal interests with ties to newsletters, blogs or websites with valuable information based on how I live. Most revolve around cooking and home, as that's my current focus. 

CULINARY GENIUS

The Gracious Gourmet is just one of the food artisans featured by The Fare Trade.

For specialty culinary delivery, nothing beats The Fare Trade. Carefully selected items from all over the U.S. chosen by award-winning chefs introduce purveyors outside of mass marketed choices. The website content/blog is outstanding. In fact, it surpasses what's on television or in magazines. The best part is that items are in your hands for experimentation so that video tutorials are useful. Learning from professionals at home is fun, as is getting to know the culinary talents selecting each month’s inclusions. If you enjoy cooking classes and mastering skills like me, The Fare Trade is the ultimate treat.

FUN AND FIT

At first I wasn’t sold on this. I previously tried BirchBox and wasn’t thrilled with sample sizes of (mostly) familiar products. But,VIP seasonal deliveries from FabFitFun are diverse, full sized and contain items I don't see elsewhere. My spring box included a dry shampoo I love, a headband I didn't, a fitness ball/DVD that travels with me, and new organic kale chip that’s now a staple. The summer box contains a launch from the amazing Sonya Dakar, so I’m psyched about the arrival. I follow FabFitFun online for tastemaker and wellness guru contributions (a bit of daily inspiration). For a mix of skincare, healthy eating, exercise and trends, the VIP box + uplifting emails is the whole package. It’s the only membership delivery service of personal products that I completely endorse. 

FRESH 

Six Boots Collective isn’t really a club, but the CSA program we’ve chosen for the season. A box of produce, herbs and flowers from 3 Middle Tennessee farms are delivered to my door each Saturday. This container of goodness guarantees I’ll stay creative with cooking and preserving. It eliminates considering non-organic items from supermarkets. Locally grown, seasonal items with the bonus of a detailed newsletter including recipes make summer even sweeter. You can pick up their boxes at Nashville area farmer’s markets. CSA’s in any locale are the way to go for the most authentic produce, and an alliance you won't regret.

SAFE SNACKING

Naturally dried pears from Nature Box.

For busy days or travel, Nature Box is salvation. With dozens of snacks serving Vegan, gluten free (or just gluten conscious) or sugarless eaters, it's a source with endless options. I like the variety, quality and that things like naturally dried California peaches never disappoint. Items (from $20 per month) are prepackaged for on-the-go energy. For every box delivered, they donate a meal via Feeding America. Snacks you can feel good about all the way around are their trademark, which is another reason to sign up.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

Love this mag for so many reasons.. including the intro to Box South. 

 The innovative magazine, Local Palate partnered with Box South - sent a teaser peaking interest for stocking my gift closet for summer visitors. It’s a monthly collection of Southern items including recipes, creative advice and other tidbits. I appreciate Box South's belief in not exploiting general topics like sweet tea or fried chicken, but focus on seeking the most sophisticated and gifted artisans. It’s not inexpensive, but products are special. Like the amazing Nashville-based Batch, which just expanded to feature a monthly Charleston box, it provides opportunity for our regional brands.

MOUTH

Look for unique items like this in the Cocktail Hour Box from MOUTH.

This NYC specialty retailer is known for hysterical comments, inventive culture and passion for what they term as ‘Indie Food’. Mouth offers one time purchases or special occasion deliveries, but also extends discounts on monthly totes full of goods ranging from all pickles to cookies 'for every night'. My pick is the Cocktail Hour Box. Since my pantry is stocked with items most visitors don’t favor (yep, that pesky healthy thing), this is super helpful for impromptu visitors. Every inclusion comes from American small batch creators. Mouth crafts each into a themed/curated collection. Elect to bump up from 3, 6 or 12 months.. and choose when. No crazy commitment -  just cocktail fare, craft mixers and conversation with Mouth's Indie-loving team. I'm totally tempted by their chocolate subscription, but holding fast at the moment.

To say I've been on 'blog break' is an understatement. I haven't posted  since early February, and don't regret a second of taking a moment (well... 2 months) off. Traveling and meeting some of the most interesting and talented people in the country has been an adventure.

 I have lots more coming up (am way behind on highlights from recent excursions) and more to learn. I am on a bit of a mission in that respect. But right now, I'm relishing being in MY CITY. I've missed every familiar face and place. It's good to be home.

Got home just in time to see the first of my bulbs blooming. Spring flowers are such a welcome sight

I have several somewhat 'grounded' weeks, and plan to embrace each day. There are friends to catch up with, volunteering to do, flowers to plant, parties to host and restaurants to try. Most importantly, it's the season for some of the city's most fun, stylish and worthwhile happenings. These are the things at the top of my list (and suggestions on what you should consider if you're in Nashville, too):

SHOPPING

My friends behind the trendsetting Private Edition are celebrating their 33rd anniversary next week (wow!). For those shopping the anniversary sale, a gift bag with unbelievable value awaits. I stock up on essentials every year to get the bag... SO worth it. What I'm most looking forward to this year are Oribe, Sisley and Laura Mercier products slated for the stash. Check their site for specifics and schedule. I might just go every day. It's that good. Founder Linda Roberts is brilliant, and even the most exclusive brands line up to support she and her team to celebrate = endless perks and freebies for shoppers.

Most people think of Maxwell Aesthetics only as an authority on reconstructive surgery, but I like it for different reasons. I popped in for Coobie cotton bra/tanks in spring hues and patterns (under $20 --and all I wear) and snapped up DNA/Do Not Age serum by Dr. Brandt. I was skeptical (even after reading rave reviews) until trying it. Worth.Every.Cent. -- and not really expensive. Convenient location and easy parking for a quick in and out make this a super efficient stop to sample innovative essentials.

MUSIC

There are dozens of great shows coming up, but my fave is Tin Pan South. So many amazing songwriters performing in intimate venues at one time is rare and special. Choosing who to see is tough, but I'm looking forward to the Peach Pickers at 3rd & Lindsley, Nicolle Gaylon at BB Kings, and of course our own group of This Music  writers at BlueBird Cafe. All access passes for the week are sold out, but there are cash-at-the-door options on a limited basis (arrive early).

COMMUNITY

Kevin Carter is hosting his annual Waiting for Wishes event at the Nashville Palm along with Jay Demarcus on 4/15. I've been on the steering committee for 13 years, and it only get's better. If you can't score seats to the dinner, don't miss the star power at this year's After Party. The music involves top-tier artists and there's really not a better cause to support.

Waiting for Wishes is always a celebrity-packed, fun evening with incredible music at the After Party. 

Cause for Paws fashion show featuring Jamie is always lovely, so that's a seat to reserve. Hugh Howser is chairing the Steeplechase LookBook Fashion Show. No matter what else is on the books, I won't miss it. With Hugh in charge, I know it will be spectacular. Ditto for the talented Martha Nemer as she showcases her work with Art on the West Side on 3/29-30. If you're looking for a treasure for your home, this is where to find it.

There are countless reasons to be curious about Nashville Fashion Week: parties, sales.. and the excitement of runway shows. The schedule is impressive and there's so much to choose from. It's such a positive opportunity for the creative personalities involved and the entire city and it starts in just a few days.

Steeplechase Lookbook Fashion Show is just one of the amazing fashion events coming up.

The last (but not least) thing on my list is relishing quality time with friends outdoors. My favorite spot is my own patio, but I also love alfresco cocktails and conversation at Saint Anejo and Virago as well as Park Cafe,  Rumours or Table 3. I'm also excited to find some new haunts.

So perfect for wasting an afternoon.....

Usually, I am not around much in January. Freezing temps send me to the warmest locale possible. With my husband's foot surgery and loose ends for publication deadlines, I've been in town/at home... actually enjoying every moment. Even the coldest days weren't terrible. I spent them experimenting in my kitchen and bar (top turnouts posted soon). One of the biggest joys was playing with items from Stephanie Stewart's A Chef's Table cookbook. The photos by Ron Manville and recipes from local culinary gurus were inspiration to create my own striking plates.

I finally caught up with other happenings in town (bonus!). Nashville is booming.. so fast that it's hard to keep up at times. I've done a quick roundup of items on my radar over the last couple of weeks (this is only part 1) that I couldn't wait to share.

My friend, Melissa of Parlour 3 bought a tour bus, gutted and converted it to the ultimate glam vehicle. That's right- - a beauty bus on the road.. and it's fantastic. As a professional hair/makeup artist to top celebs, she knows the struggles of 'on location' work. Now, shooting remote videos won't require difficult set ups.. and bridal parties can be completely groomed in a church parking lot. It will be a blast for women's showers or parties. The possibilities are endless. Look for lots of media buzz on this, as it's the first of it's kind.. genius and gorgeous!

The only bus I cannot wait to be on. 

As for the food scene, be prepared to be  riddled with temptation from all of the new openings. 12 South is exploding with promise as the charming Josephine fills up nightly while the same owners work to open Prima in the ground floor of The Gulch's Terrazzo. Look for a dedicated post on Josephine experience this week. Just as they are wowing patrons, Espice is also finalizing plans to open doors nearby. Talk about a cool place to be for walking nightlife! I also love the new tacos added to the menu at recently opened Saint Anejo. Spicing things up has never tasted better.

No need to blow a diet at Josephine.. the clean-eating vegetables are better than any burger. 

 Nashville Originals' restaurant week (1/20-26) includes incredible multi-course meals at sensational savings. Reservations are filling up fast at member locations so be sure to make some.
  

Step inside Emerson Grace for a total fashion fix.. and don't miss stopping at the fab Cadeau Home next door. 

On the shopping front, clearance sales are still in play, but there's also an abundant choice of new merchandise. Fun new stores like Blue Bohemian sport reasonably priced lines like Judith March. At Emerson Grace fashion fans are digging the coolest vibe in a unisex clothing and accessory boutique to hit the city yet. While browsing the coffee table book selection Absolution, I found a line that speaks to the heart..The Giving Keys. Not only are the pieces casually chic - the company exists to employ persons transitioning out of homeless situations and supports international charities. There's one catch; you have to give it away at some point to really pay it forward. Now that's a product that I can feel good about buying... 

Each Giving Key piece has a positive message engraved on the surface. Stylish + sentimental = love!
